Barrington was discovered by the early French, whose settlements were destroyed during the 1755 Expulsion of the Acadiens. Following the American Revolution the French settlements were replaced by the British loyalist, New Englander planters and fishermen. Linked by a mile long causeway to Cape Sable Island with white sand coastline leading to "The Hawk Point" where birdwatches from around the world gather at the Important Bird Area, home of the Piping Plover. Nearby Clark's Harbour was the birthplace of the Cape Sable Island boat, which handles well in both rough seas and shallow water, with modernized versions still used in most fishing and seafood harvesting operations.
Pubnico derives its name from the Mi'kmaq word meaning "cleared land". Settled in 1653 by Acadians, these villages (West Pubnico, Middle West Pubnico and Lower West Pubnico) are the oldest in Canada that are still occupied by descendants of the founders. They rely heavily on the sea for their livelyhood, and the area maintains several wharves, breakwaters, fishing fleets, and fish processing plants.
ShelburneHarbour has the third best natural harbour in the world. The native Mik'maq traversed the Roseway River and used the surrounding lands for summer encampments long before our shores were visited by Spanish, Portuguese and French fishermen. From the earliest times Shelburne has been a centre for the building of ships. The first vessel launched at Shelburne was the 181-ton, Roseway, built for MacLean and Bogle in 1786. Commissary Island, now a peninsula, was the area from which the Commissary General dispensed supplies of flour, pork, and salt to the Loyalists. Many of Shelburne's buildings date back to Loyalist times.
